Increasing Importance of Mental Health

Physical fitness is core to the school curriculum. But mental health isn’t so much. You can’t tell, looking from the outside, what’s going on, on the inside. What is stressing them and to what degree. Occasionally, sadly, a pupil slips through the net and takes their own life, with devastating consequences. Many more teens suffer hidden stress, anxiety and depression, when a tsunami of hormones, body changes, first romances and new freedoms, all happen just as they are required to step up academic performance.

Perfect storm of metamorphosis, first romances and academic pressure.

The teens are a stressful time for pupils.

Failsafe identifies the presence of stress-triggers earlier than usual.

Before They’re Ready To Talk

Our new approach to mental health encourages students who bottle things up, to alert you to a problem discreetly. It lets students ask for help by sending a picture. A Picture Alert. Alerts lower the threshold at which students feel able to open up. They make it easier for students to ask for help, because they don’t need to say anything. The Alert says it for them. Which is useful for problems that are difficult to talk about and situations that divide their loyalty.

Who is Failsafe?

Failsafe is a not-for-profit cause, set up to improve the Nation’s well-being. We developed the alerts as a positive coping strategy when you have a lot on your mind, and need support, but the situation isn’t bad enough for anti-depressants or counselling. Learn more.

What are Alerts?

Alerts are a request for help. They represent the most common positive coping strategies and increasing levels of support requirement. Moral support. Someone to talk to. A safe space. A lifeline.

A great complement to your current pastoral care.

Here are some of the alerts in the app:

Students can download our app to put the alerts onto their phone’s keyboard. Teens are comfortable with emojis, gifs and stickers, like these. The Alerts are a request for help. They require action from the person they are sent to. Not actual size. App includes other alerts not shown here.

Adopt Failsafe’s signalling system in your school.

Implementation Tips!

  1. Choose a member of staff to be the Failsafe Rep.

  2. Agree one single designated smartphone number for alerts to be sent to.

  3. Plus one preferred communication channel eg iMessage, Messenger, WhatsApp, Snapchat or email.

  4. The Failsafe Rep will pick up the alerts up from this number via the agreed channel, and act to a pre-agreed policy plan.

  5. Using picture alerts will lower the threshold at which students feel able to open up.

  6. We recommend adopting this system in a ring-fenced cohort first, eg, a specific student year group, to get their feedback and gain trust, prior to rollout.

  7. We can provide a few presentation slides to use in your student briefing, and support the implementation if needed.

  8. The app, alerts and presentation slides are all FREE. A small fee would be chargeable for implementation support. Contact us here to discuss specifics relating to your school.

  9. Implementing this system will help you to become more “tuned-in” to the mental health of students in your care.
